Building Strength & Capacity

“Never work in isolation!”

This is one of our favorite principles at Counseling In Schools. Knowing who you can rely on for support is top priority for self-care, even for people who are not experiencing trauma or grief.

It is extremely important to build a strong support network for yourself and for any “target” students that may be experiencing academic, social, or emotional difficulties. We all need a sounding board, someone to listen, someone who can make us laugh.  Reaching out to a source of support, whether it be a health professional, colleague, family member, or friend, is a vital buffer between yourself and your stress or potential Vicarious Trauma.

It is easier to ask for help when you are clear about who can support you and what types of support they can offer. When we have a thought-through plan in mind for moments where we need help, there is one less thing to add stress to that moment.

This process makes us more resilient because we are able to get the help we need more quickly by including people who are truly helpful. Follow the instructions below to build your support network.

To map out an intentional support network for yourself or for students, check out our "Support Network" process in the Activity Corner.
